A major football star and all-around athlete at Dartmouth College, Lane was only the second American player to play for the Rangers and the first from the Northeastern U.S. His signing with the Blueshirts was a milestone event, since it marked the end of his football career, but he lasted only half a season in New York before being sold to his hometown Boston Bruins.
Following his retirement, Lane pursued a career in law and worked as a U.S. attorney before eventually rising to the position of New York State Supreme Court judge in 1969.
