Mackey was one of several players brought to the Rangers from the Western Hockey League by first Blueshirts coach Lester Patrick. He lasted one season with the team before having his rights sold to the minor-league Boston Tigers one week before the start of the 1927-28 season. Three years later, he earned second-team All-Star status in the Can-Am league, but never made it back to the NHL and was eventually reinstated as an amateur in 1932.
