BIOGRAPHY A two-time NHL All-Star during his seven full seasons in New York, Bob Nevin was a reliable winger who enjoyed his highest-scoring seasons with the Blueshirts. He also had a six-year run as team captain.
Nevin came to the Rangers in the much-publicized Feburary 1964 trade that sent Andy Bathgate to Toronto. Although he faced the lofty expectations of filling Bathgate`s skates, Nevin soon showed he could be a major player and pick up some slack on right wing.
By the 1965-66 season, his first full season as captain, Nevin was at the top of his game, scoring 29 goals and a career-high 62 points to win Rangers MVP honors. His year was truly one for the books. He finished seventh in the league in goals and eighth in points, prompting Rangers coach and general manager Emile Francis to label him a budding superstar.
Although he slipped to 20 goals and 44 points the following season, Nevin led the Rangers to their first playoff appearance in five years.
The 1967-68 and 1968-69 seasons were both banner years for Nevin, who combined for 59 goals over those two campaigns, with his 31 goals representing a career high.
