Patrick arrived at Madison Square Garden for the start of the 1934-35 season and instantly established himself as one of the team`s top players. He would spend the next nine years in a Rangers uniform before leaving the team to join the U.S. military from 1943 to 1945. After completing his service in World War II, Patrick returned to the Rangers for one final season at age 33. Following his retirement, Patrick coached the Blueshirts for part of the 1948-49 season and the entire 1949-50 season, in which he led the Blueshirts to the Stanley Cup Finals.
