New York Pee Wee Rangers Storm to 5-0 Win Over Anaheim Junior Ducks

The New York Pee Wee Rangers left no doubt that they were ready for the prime time spotlight of the Quebec International Pee Wee Tournament.

The club came out flying as they skated to a decisive 5-0 victory over the Anaheim Junior Ducks as the featured attraction this past Sunday evening at Le Colisee, former home to the NHL’s Quebec Nordiques (today’s Colorado Avalanche).

With two goals from both Arthur Kaliyev and Trevor Zegras, and a power play tally from captain Dom Fensore, the Pee Wee Rangers overpowered Anaheim's club. Almost lost in the excitement was the fact that mainstay goaltender Spencer Knight notched a shutout. The rangy, six-foot-one goaltender got plenty of help from his teammates who backchecked with a passion. A particular standout was defenseman Ryan Pineault, who played a fearless game.

It was a total team victory, after which co-coach Paul Messier said, “The team executed their gameplan as well as anyone could expect right from the drop of the puck. I thought we had a lot of speed and out-manned Anaheim on the puck the whole game. We limited their chances, and when they got one, Spencer Knight was right there. Every player did his job and nobody took a shortcut.”

The team followed up the win with two victories in an exhibition doubleheader at Trois Glaces Arena against the Colorado Thunderbirds (4-2) and Halifax Hawks (3-0), respectively.

The Pee Wee Rangers are gearing up for their next official game of the tournament, which will come on Thursday, February 20th against the formidable Minutemen Flames from Boston.
