New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that the club has acquired forwards Nikolai Zherdev and Dan Fritsche from the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for defensemen Fedor Tyutin and Christian Backman.

Nikolai Zherdev, the No. 4 overall pick in the 2003 NHL draft, cracked the 25-goal mark in two of the past three seasons.
Zherdev, 23, was originally Columbus' first round choice, fourth overall, in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft.  He appeared in 82 games with the the Blue Jackets this past season, registering 26 goals and 35 assists for 61 points, along with 34 penalty minutes. He led the Blue Jackets in assists (35) and finished second in goals (26), points (61) and shots (254).

In addition, his seven power play goals ranked third on the team, while his three game-winning goals tied for third.  He established career-highs in games played (82), assists, points, and shots.  The Kiev, Ukraine, native also recorded 13 multiple-point games, including one four-point effort on December 29 vs. Carolina (two goals and two assists).

The 6-2, 205-pounder has skated in 283 regular season contests with Columbus, recording 76 goals and 105 assists for 181 points, along with 164 penalty minutes.  In 2005-06, he established career-highs with 27 goals and 10 power play goals.  He also set a personal best with 14 multiple-point contests, including two three-point efforts.

As a rookie in 2003-04, Zherdev ranked fifth in the league among rookies in assists (21), tied for sixth in points (34), power play goals (five) and shots (137), and tied for ninth in goals (13).  Additionally, he appeared in the 2004 YoungStars Game as part of the NHL All-Star weekend.

Fritsche, 22, appeared in 69 games with the Columbus Blue Jackets this past season, registering 10 goals and 12 assists for 22 points, along with 22 penalty minutes. 

Ohio-born Dan Fritsche, a three-year NHL veteran with Columbus, was a teammate of the Rangers' Dan Girardi's on the 2005 Memorial Cup-winning London Knights.
He ranked fifth on the club in goals (10), and tied for eighth on the team in points (22) and 10th in assists (12).  He established a career-high with 109 shots and tied his personal best with four game-winning goals, which ranked second on the team.  Fritsche posted three multiple-point efforts this season.

The 6-1, 206-pounder has appeared in 206 career regular season contests with Columbus, recording 29 goals and 34 assists for 63 points, along with 91 penalty minutes.  He established career-highs in goals (12), assists (15), points (27), plus/minus rating (plus-three), penalty minutes (35), and power play goals (five) during the 2006-07 season. 

Fritsche registered his first career multiple-goal game on October 5, 2005 at Washington (two goals), becoming the first player in Columbus franchise history to record a multiple-goal game on Opening Night. The Parma, Ohio native was originally Columbus’ second round choice, 46th overall, in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft.

Tyutin, 24, appeared in 82 games with the Rangers this past season, collecting five goals and 15 assists for 20 points, along with 43 penalty minutes.

Backman, 28, appeared in 63 games with the St. Louis Blues and Rangers this past season, registering three goals and 15 assists for 18 points, along with 50 penalty minutes.
