Pavel Valentenko, one of the two Rangers prospects acquired from Montreal in the June 30 trade involving Scott Gomez, played his first 2009-10 preseason game with Moscow Dynamo on Saturday, helping Dynamo beat host Mytischy 4-2.
Valentenko assisted on Leonid Komarov's empty-net goal at 19:42 of the third period, which closed out the scoring. Although Valentenko is playing in Russia, his NHL rights belong to the Rangers under terms of a contract he signed with the Canadiens last year.
In other prospect news, at the U.S. National Junior Team evaluation camp, Rangers draftee Ryan Bourque picked up the primary assist on a goal by Jeremy Morin, helping Team Blue defeat White 6-2 in the first of three intra-squad scrimmages on Friday night at Lake Placid.
Bourque assisted on Team Blue's final goal at 15:14 of the seond, making it 6-1 at the time. Rangers first-round pick Chris Kreider played for team white and was called for a hooking penalty in that period. Derek Stepan joined Bourque on the winning Blue team.
In Game 2 of the series on Saturday night, Team White came back for a 2-1 win with Kreider picking up an assist on the game's first goal on a power play at 11:12 of the opening period. Kreider used his great speed to make the play happen, driving in on the wing and beating a defenseman before sending the puck through the slot for a tap-in goal by Robbi Czarnik.
Kreider also had a tripping penalty in Saturday's first period, while Bourque was called for tripping in the third.
