Bourque scores in Team USA rout of Russia

Fellow Blueshirts prospect Stepan registers assist on first U.S. goal

Tuesday, 08.11.2009 / 11:37 PM / Prospects Central
Rangers prospects Ryan Bourque and Derek Stepan both had a hand in Team USA's 8-1 domination of the Russian national Under-20 team on Tuesday night at Lake Placid, N.Y.

Bourque scored a goal, and Stepan had an assist for the Americans, who got their four-game series vs. Russia off to a rousing start. Fellow Rangers prospect Chris Kreider, the team's 2009 first-round draft pick, is also a member of Team USA at the weeklong event.

Stepan, who is entering his sophomore year at the University of Wisconsin, was the first Rangers prospect to crack the scoresheet on Tuesday night. He picked up the lone assist on Danny Kristo's goal at 2:03 of the opening period to make it 1-0.

The Russians answered back just 14 seconds after Kristo's first of two goals, but New Jersey resident Kyle Palmieri needed only another 27 seconds to score the eventual game-winner. Palmieri broke the 1-1 tie at 2:44 of the first. The U.S. led 3-1 after one period and never looked back.

Bourque's power-play goal at 10:11 of the middle period gave the Americans a 6-1 lead. Bourque, a 2009 third-round pick by the Blueshirts was assisted by U.S. defenseman John Moore, who was picked in the first round of the draft.

Team USA won't have to wait long to see the Russians again. The second of four USA-Russia matchups will take place on Wednesday night at 6 p.m.
