If the early part of the preseason is any indication, the hot spot for Rangers prospects in major-junior hockey this season might be Quebec.
Chris Doyle, the Rangers' 2008 fifth-round draft pick, and Ryan Bourque, their 2009 third-rounder, have each scored four points through their first two preseason games in the QMJHL.
In a road game on Friday night, Doyle enjoyed a three-point performance in his second preseason outing with the Prince Edward Island Rocket. Doyle, who fired a game-high 10 shots on goal, scored a pair of goals and added an assist on the game-winner as the Rocket stormed back from a 4-2 deficit with three goals in the final 10:31 of the third period and beat host Acadie-Bathurst 5-4.
Doyle picked up his first goal at 10:49 of the opening period to give PEI a 2-1 lead. He scored again, unassisted at 9:29 of the third to cut the lead to 4-3 and then picked up the second assist on Brandon MacLean's game-winning, power-play tally with only 33 seconds remaining in regulation. For his efforts, Doyle was named the game's No. 3 star.
In another QMJHL game on Friday night, Bourque picked up an assist in the Quebec Remparts' 6-3 win at Chicoutimi. Bourque got the ball rolling with the primary assist on Danick Paquette's power-play goal at 15:26 of the first period gave the Remparts a 1-0 lead. Bourque had picked up three points in his QMJHL preseason debut last weekend.
It was also a big night for 2009 draft pick Roman Horak. The Rangers' fifth-round pick from the Czech Republic scored Chilliwack's first goal of the preseason in a 4-2 win over visiting Kelowna, the defending WHL champion. He also set up his team's second goal, giving the Bruins a 2-0 lead. Horak was making his major-junior preseason debut after spending his entire career in Europe.
