OHL honors three Rangers prospects

Werek, Thomas, and Stajcer will all represent league against Team Russia

Friday, 10.22.2010 / 10:56 AM / Prospects Central

Rangers prospect Ethan Werek, the team's second-round pick in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, received a big honor from the Ontario Hockey League on Thursday, when he was among only five players chosen to compete in both of the OHL's Subway Super Series games against Team Russia on Nov. 11 and Nov. 15.

Werek will be joined by two other Rangers prospects in the series opener on Nov. 11 at London, Ontario. Right wing Christian Thomas, the Blueshirts' 2010 second-round pick, and goaltender Scott Stajcer, a 2009 fifth-rounder, were named to Team OHL for the London game. Werek will also play the Nov. 15 game at Sudbury, Ontario, as the Rangers' lone representative.

An alternate captain of the Kingston Frontenacs, Werek has his 2010-11 season off to a big start with six goals and 11 points in seven games, including at least one point in all seven of those games.

Werek was a key member of the Rangers team that competed at the 2010 Traverse City (Mich.) Prospects Tournament, but missed much of the team's main training camp with an ankle injury.

Thomas, one of the top scorers in the OHL with a remarkable 10 goals and 15 points in eight games, also had a seven-game point-scoring streak for his Oshawa Generals team this season and was a teammate of Werek's in Traverse City.

Thomas already has a hat trick this season against Werek's Kingston team and also scored eight goals iin his first four OHL games after returning from the Rangers' main training camp.

Stajcer, who started two games for the Rangers in Traverse City, has been the hottest goalie in the OHL this season, going a perfect 8-0-0 thorugh is first eight starts and ranking first overall in the OHL in save percentage (.937) and second in goals-against average (2.12).

Based on their play so far this season, all three of the Rangers prospects are likely to receive strong consideration for spots on Canada's 2011 World Junior Championship team, although Werek was the only one of the three who took part in Canada's summer evaluation camp.
