Rangers duo in Sunday's All-Star Game
Lundqvist, Staal look to earn bragging rights for defenseman's big brother
• Staal Picks Staal for All-Star Squad
Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist and defenseman Marc Staal will compete for Team Staal in the NHL All-Star Game this afternoon at the RBC Center in Raleigh, N.C.
Lundqvist and Staal were both selected in Friday night's NHL All-Star Fantasy Draft by Carolina Hurricanes captain Eric Staal, Marc's older brother and the Team Staal captain today. Lundqvist was the third goaltender and 11th overall player selected in the draft, while Staal was chosen by his brother with the 13th overall pick.
Team Staal will go up against a team captained by Detroit Red Wings defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom. In Saturday night's SuperSkills competition, Team Staal easily defeated Team Lidstrom by a score of 33-22. Lundqvist played a big part in the victory, stopping 10 of 11 shots in the Elimination Shootout event.
Team Staal is likely to be the more popular side today, since it has three members of the Carolina Hurricanes in Eric Staal, goaltender Cam Ward, and rookie forward Jeff Skinner. Because Carolina is the host team, the majority of the crowd is likely to be rooting for its local All-Stars.
Lundqvist is making his second career NHL All-Star Game appearance, while Staal, who turned 24 earlier this month, is competing in the game for the first time.
