Rangers prospect Christian Thomas, the first Blueshirts draftee since Ryan Callahan to score 50 goals in an OHL season, has been named the Ontario Hockey League Player of the Week for the second time this season.

Thomas, the son of former NHL star Steve Thomas, led the entire OHL with nine points in three games during the week that ended on Sunday -- scoring a league-high six goals -- including his 50th of the season -- while adding three assists.

Rangers prospect Christian Thomas got to wear the team's uniform when he took part in the 2010 Traverse City Prospects Tournament, playing a couple of games on a line with Derek Stepan.
Thomas, who leads the OHL with 54 goals, is one of only two 50-goal scorers in the league so far in 2010-11. By reaching 50 goals, Thomas and his father became the first father-son combination in league history to each achieve the milestone. Steve Thomas, who went on to score more than 400 goals in the NHL, had a 51-goal season with the OHL's Toronto Marlboros in 1983-84.

Christian’s 50th goal came as part of a hat trick on Friday in a 6-5 win over the Kingston Frontenacs. Two nights earlier, he came within one goal of the milestone by scoring once and adding two assists in a 5-4 win over Belleville.

On Sunday, Thomas completed his big week with two goals in a 4-3 win over Peterborough. Thomas scored a shootout goal to force extra rounds in that victory, keeping the Generals from losing the game.

A second-round Rangers pick last June, Thomas, chosen 40th overall, has done nothing but add to his NHL credentials since the draft. At the Traverse City Prospects Tournament in Traverse City, Mich., he was one of the Rangers' most effective players, scoring the kinds of goals that lift people out of their seats and seeing a lot of ice time on the team's top line with current Rangers rookie Derek Stepan and Connecticut Whale forward Evgeny Grachev.

Thomas was also named the OHL Player of the Week for the week ending Nov. 21, 2010. Two days later, he was named the Player of the Week for all of major-junior hockey -- an honor he is now in the running for after claiming the OHL award.
