This season, the New York Rangers teamed up with Power to Learn to bring an exciting introductory hockey program to eight schools in the tri-state area.

Designed for elementary students, the Rangers Power to Learn Hockey 101 program stresses the importance of living a healthy, active lifestyle while providing kids the opportunity to play hockey in a safe, structured environment. Through this fully funded program, over 1,500 students have the opportunity to learn the fun and joy of hockey, free of charge. To make the game even more accessible, the program provides equipment, instruction and a connection to the New York Rangers.

The program kicked off with the Rangers Hockey Development Staff making visits to each of the participating schools to train the Physical Education teachers on the basics of hockey and safety procedures. The intent behind the visits was to ensure the teachers felt comfortable implementing and running the program effectively. After the training sessions, the Physical Education teachers created a four to six week program that worked within the curriculum at each of their schools. In addition to receiving the street hockey equipment, the schools were provided with t-shirts, instructional booklets and water bottles to give to their students.

Also as a part of the Rangers Power to Learn Hockey 101 program, participating schools have an opportunity to win a special visit from the Rangers Road Tour. Three lucky schools will be selected at the end of the school year. The Rangers Road Tour will set-up a special street hockey tournament for the students at these schools and will have Rangers alumni on hand to sign autographs, take photos and distribute certificates of achievement.

Check back soon for a complete recap with photos from the Rangers Road Tour visits!
