New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that the club has agreed to terms with goaltender Martin Biron on a new contract.

Biron, 34, has posted a 20-12-2 record with a 2.32 goals against average, .912 save percentage and two shutouts in 38 games over the last two seasons with the Rangers after signing with the team as a free agent on July 1, 2010.

Last season, Biron was 12-6-2 with a 2.46 goals against average, .904 save percentage and two shutouts in 21 games. He tied for fourth among NHL goaltenders with three assists on the season. Biron became the 60th goaltender in NHL history to appear in 500 career games on April 5 at Pittsburgh. He also posted his first shutout with the Blueshirts, stopping all 23 shots faced on November 6 against Winnipeg.

Goalie Martin Biron, who thrived in the role of Henrik Lundqvist's backup for the two seasons, will remain a Ranger after agreeing to a new contract.

Biron posted an 8-6-0 mark with a 2.13 goals against average and .923 save percentage in 2010-11, his first season with the Rangers. He held opponents to two or fewer goals in nine of his 15 starts that season, and won in his Rangers debut with a 24-save effort in a 2-1 victory on October 21, 2010, at Toronto. Biron missed the last 18 games of the season with a fractured collarbone suffered on February 28, 2011.

The 14-year NHL veteran has appeared in 500 career regular season games with the Buffalo Sabres, Philadelphia Flyers, New York Islanders, and Rangers, posting a record of 228-188-25-26 along with a 2.61 goals against average, .911 save percentage and 28 shutouts.

He is one of only four players in NHL history, along with Pat LaFontaine, Mike Donnelly and Jason Dawe, to play for all three teams in the state of New York. Biron has surpassed the 20-win plateau five times, including a career-high 31 wins with Buffalo in 2001-02. He registered his 200th career victory with a 38-save shutout as an Islander on October 31, 2009, against Buffalo.

Biron made his NHL debut on December 26, 1995 at Pittsburgh, earned his first career victory on March 5, 1999 vs. Dallas and recorded his first NHL shutout on November 19, 1999 at Atlanta.

In postseason play, Biron has posted a record of 11-12 with a 2.87 goals against average, .908 save percentage and two shutouts in 23 career contests with Philadelphia. He led the Flyers to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2008, registering a 9-8 mark with a 2.97 goals against average and one shutout in 17 games. His nine wins and 17 appearances both ranked fourth in the NHL.

The Lac St. Charles, Quebec native was originally Buffalo's first round choice, 16th overall, in the 1995 NHL Entry Draft.
