St. Croix Agrees to First NHL Contract

Michael St. Croix, the Rangers' 2011 fourth-round draft pick who agreed to terms on his first NHL contract on Sept. 14, opened up his final major-junior season in style on Thursday night with a goal and an assist in the Edmonton Oil Kings' 5-3 win over Kootenay.

Coming off a dominating year that saw him score 105 points and help Edmonton win the WHL championship in his first post-draft Western Hockey League season, St. Croix, an alternate captain, showed that he will be a major force for the Oil Kings again in Thursday's season-opening victory.

He needed roughly a minute to get the game's first goal, scoring for a 1-0 lead at 1:01 of the first.

St. Croix

In the second period, St. Croix earned his second point of the night on a power play, picking up the first assist on a goal by Henrik Samuelsson, the son of former Rangers defenseman Ulf Samuelsson. That goal gave the Oil Kings a 4-2 lead at 12:14 of the second. Last season, St. Croix recorded 36 of his 105 points on the man-advantage.

St. Croix and the Oil Kings return to action on Sunday with another home game against the Red Deer Rebels.
