St. Croix Agrees to First NHL Contract


Michael St. Croix, the Rangers' 2011 fourth-round draft pick, continued his strong start in the Western Hockey League on Sunday by scoring two goals to help the defending champion Edmonton Oil Kings beat visiting Red Deer 6-2.

St. Croix, who ranked among the WHL's top scorers with 105 points last season, had two points in the Oil Kings' opener on Thursday -- less than a week after signing his first pro contract with the Rangers.

On Thursday, St. Croix had needed only 61 seconds to score in his 2012-13 debut. On Sunday afternoon, he needed only 89 seconds, giving Edmonton a 1-0 lead at 1:29 of the first period.

St. Croix, an alternate captain, scored his second goal of the game with 28 seconds left on an Edmonton power play at 8:10 of the second period, opening up a 4-1 lead for the Oil Kings.

The Oil Kings dominated the Rebels throughout the game, outshooting Red Deer 53-20 to improve to 2-0 on the season. Edmonton's next game will be Wednesday night at Lethbridge.
