Life Center, a shelter for homeless children and families on the Lower East side, was directly impacted by Hurricane Sandy causing residents to be affected due to flooding and power loss.
The alumni and staff were joined at the event by Speaker of the NY State Assembly Sheldon Silver and New York City Homeless Services Commissioner Seth Diamond. After a brief program kicking off the festivities, which included a DJ, Rangers giveaways, and much-needed blankets, a traditional thanksgiving feast was served for the 350 children and families of Life Center affected by Hurricane Sandy.
“It is fantastic to be here,” said Rangers alumnus Adam Graves. “This event is a time for families and communities to step back and reflect on the privilege of sharing. We’re happy to be able to bring them a meal for the holiday.”
Life Center is one of Garden of Dreams’ 22 partner organizations. The focus of Life Center is to prepare participants for the world of work and for permanent housing, in addition to enhancing their ability to live and grow independently. There are 210 children from 6 months to 18 years old who are members of the 93 homeless families living at the Life Center.
