'Behind the Bench' returns to MSG
Season 3 of show featuring Rangers head coach Tortorella starts Thursday
Season 3 of MSG Network’s original program “Behind the Bench,” featuring New York Rangers coach John Tortorella and Rangers coaching legend Mike Keenan, will premiere Thursday, February 7 at 6:00 p.m. The show will immediately precede MSG’s live coverage of the Rangers-Islanders game from Madison Square Garden.
Bill Pidto returns as host of the show to lead the coaching duo in discussions about the Rangers and current topics around the NHL. The 30-minute, twice monthly program provides fans with unprecedented access to Rangers practices, game reviews and coaching strategies.
Each episode will feature a number of segments, including: “You Asked For It,” where the coaches answer email and video questions from fans; “The Film Room,” where Coach Tortorella breaks down film while providing analysis of player performances and explanation of team strategy; “Open Mic,” which listens in as a member of the coaching staff is mic’ed up during a practice or a game; and “Driven,” in which a player talks about what drives him to be successful.
At 10:00 p.m. on Thursday, following live coverage of the Rangers-Islanders game, an all-new episode of “Beginnings” will debut featuring Rangers forward Brad Richards. Richards sends MSG’s cameras to the Canadian town of Murray Harbour in Prince Edward Island, where he grew up the son of a lobster fisherman and was a summer camp instructor of Penguins star Sidney Crosby, to meet the family and friends that helped shape his hockey career.
MSG’s weekly comprehensive hockey show “Hockey Night Live” continues Saturday, February 9 at 9:30 p.m. with host Al Trautwig and analysts Billy Jaffe, Ken Daneyko and Dave Maloney. The show follows a marathon of “Beginnings” episodes at 6:00 p.m. starring Ryan Callahan, Derek Stepan, Brian Boyle, Marc Staal, Dan Girardi, Ryan McDonagh and Richards.
