Mats Zuccarello wins 2013-14 Steven McDonald Extra Effort Award
Presented by Lenox Hill Hospital
The New York Rangers announced that Mats Zuccarello has been named winner of the 2013-14 Steven McDonald Extra Effort Award, presented by Lenox Hill Hospital.
The Steven McDonald Extra Effort Award recognizes the player who performs “above and beyond the call of duty.” The award, which is voted on by the fans, is named after New York City police officer Steven McDonald, who was shot and injured in the call of duty on July 12, 1986. The award has been given annually since 1988 to the player who fans believe plays with extra effort on the ice.
The Oslo, Norway native joins Jan Erixon (1987-88, 1990-91) and Henrik Lundqvist (2005-06) as the only European-born players who have won the Steven McDonald Extra Effort Award. Zuccarello made his second career Olympic appearance this season, representing Norway at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. His 57 points this season are the most by a Norwegian-born player in one season in NHL history.
