Rangers Agree To Terms With Free Agent Defenseman Dan Boyle

Boyle registered 12 goals and 24 assists for 36 points, along with 32 penalty minutes in 75 games with San Jose this past season. He led the team in average ice time (21:16), ranked third on the team in power play goals (six), tied for third on the team in power play assists (12), and finished fourth on the team in power play points (18). Boyle also led all Sharks defensemen in goals, points, shots on goal (154), power play goals, power play assists, and power play points, and ranked second among team defensemen in assists. He tallied nine points (four goals, five assists) in the final 10 games of the regular season, including a six-game point streak from March 24 at Calgary to April 3 vs. Los Angeles (three goals, three assists over the span). During his six-game point streak, Boyle tied a career-high with a three-game goal streak from March 27 vs. Winnipeg to April 1 vs. Edmonton. He recorded his 400th career NHL assist on December 3 at Toronto, and he skated in his 900th career NHL game on December 5 at Pittsburgh.

During the 2014 Playoffs, Boyle tallied four assists and recorded eight penalty minutes in seven games. He led the team in average ice time (21:51), power play assists (three), and power play points (three), tied for the team lead in assists, and led San Jose defensemen in points (four).

In 954 career games with Florida, Tampa Bay, and San Jose, Boyle has registered 144 goals and 417 assists for 561 points, along with 643 penalty minutes. Since the 2002-03 season, Boyle has recorded more points (502) than any active defenseman in the NHL. Over the last five seasons, the two-time NHL all-star led all NHL defensemen in power play points (104), ranked second in power play assists (80), and ranked fifth in assists (160) and points (212). Since his first full NHL season in 2000-01, Boyle has led defensemen on his team in points nine times, and has tied for the team lead among defensemen in points once.

The 5-11, 190-pounder has registered 14 goals and 56 assists for 70 points, along with 68 penalty minutes in 107 career playoff games. Boyle has reached the playoffs in 10 of his last 11 seasons, dating back to his first playoff appearance in 2003 with Tampa Bay. During the 2004 Playoffs, Boyle led all NHL defensemen in power play points (seven), tied for the NHL lead among defensemen in points (10), and posted a plus-seven rating to help the Lightning capture the Stanley Cup. In the 2011 Playoffs, he established playoff career-highs in goals (four) and points (16), and tied a playoff career-high in assists (12) with San Jose. Boyle led all NHL defensemen in assists and points, and tied for first among NHL defensemen in power play points (eight) in the playoffs while helping the Sharks advance to the Western Conference Finals.

Internationally, the Ottawa, Ontario native has represented Team Canada in numerous tournaments. Boyle tied for first among defensemen on Team Canada with six points (one goal, five assists) and posted a plus-five rating in seven games to help the Canadians capture the gold medal at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. He also recorded three assists in nine games while helping Team Canada capture the silver medal at the 2005 World Championship in Austria.

Boyle was originally signed as a free agent by Florida on March 30, 1998.
