STAT OF THE GAME
Washington had a 37-24 advantage in total hits, as a big part of its strategy entering the game was to knock Rangers players off the puck. In the less physical meeting on Oct. 8 at Washington's Verizon Center, the Capitals' advantage in hits was only 22-16.

THE BIGGER PICTURE
The toughest game of the current homestand was the opener, so the Rangers received an important tuneup for the two games against weaker Florida and Columbus teams, which both caused unexpected trouble at The Garden last season.

THREE-STAR SELECTIONS BY NEWYORKRANGERS.COM
 |
1. Marian Gaborik
A brilliant night for Gaborik, who showed why he is tied for the league goal-scoring lead by tallying once at event strength and once on the power play.
2. Sean Avery
He was a pest all night, drawing penalties in the Washington zone in a way he has mastered during his career. He also assisted on the tying goal.
3. Dan Girardi
Defenseman set up the games' first goal, scored by Gaborik just 76 seconds into the opening period.
