Prospects win tourney opener

Defenseman Ryan McDonagh was wearing the "C"
for the prospects in their game against Columbus.
The Rangers prospects defeated the Columbus Blue Jackets prospects in the opening game of the 2010 Traverse City Prospects Tournament on Saturday at Huntington Rink.

Here is an in-game account of what took place. All times are Eastern Standard.

RANGERS 5, COLUMBUS 4 (FINAL)

GAME WINNING GOAL:
RANGERS -- EVGENY GRACHEV

GRACHEV FROM STEPAN OFF A FACEOFF AT 19:53 TO WIN IT.

Derek Stepan finished the game with a goal and three assists to lead the Rangers.

5:38 p.m. -- It's a final. On scoring play, Derek Stepan won a faceoff to Grachev alone at top of circle. Grachev rifled the puck in for the fourth straight win at Traverse City by a Rangers prospects team, dating back to last year.

5:37 -- Evgeny Grachev has won the game for the Rangers with 6.1 seconds to go!

5:36 -- Big stop on McKelvie with 8.2 seconds left. Stepan's line on ice for this faceoff.

5:34 -- Under two minutes to go. Rangers just had good pressure from Bourque and Stepan. Horak line out now.

5:31 -- Under four minutes to go. Still tied 4-4. Shots are 26-23 in favor of the Rangers.

5:28 -- Faceoff in Columbus zone with six minutes to go. Minnesota has beaten  Carolina 2-1 in the other Gretzky Division game. The Rangers will play Carolina next.

5:23 -- 10:01 left in the third period.

5:21 -- Great power play pressure from Bourque an Stepan with Grachev stationed in front of net. Columbus barely managed to clear zone after a long stretch of Rangers possession Penalty killed.

5:20 -- Rangers on power play with Ted Ruth in the box. Stepan line out with Maggio and McDonagh on points, relieved by Niemi and Kundratek.

5:19 -- Great work down low by Ethan Werek and Randy McNaught draws penalty at 6:41.

5:16 -- Stop on McIlrath slapper. 15:40 to go.

5:12 -- Stacjer came up with big save on shot from right circle. Just over two minutes gone in the third. Shots are 23-15.

5:10 -- Third period under way. Stepan gets first shot of period, which is stopped.

5:08 -- Teams back on ice for the third period.

4:55 -- One period to go here. The Rangers were very strong in the second period. Derek Stepan is the talk of this game. Minnesota is leading Carolina in the other game 2-1 with eight minutes to go.

AFTER TWO PERIODS, GAME IS TIED 4-4. RANGERS OUTSHOOTING JACKETS 22-14

4:50 -- McDonagh and Kundratek at points with Stepan line on this power play. Columbus manages to kill the penalty. Maggio had best shot from right point. Period ends.

4:49 -- Rangers power play at 17:40. Columbus' Kanto for slashing. Shots are 21-14 for Rangers.

4:48 -- Four minutes to go in period. Tied 4-4.

4:46 -- Stajcer makes best save of game on a wide-open chance by Columbus' Franklin in the slot. Pad save, caught it with his left leg.

4:43 -- Columbus applying pressure. Shot just got deflected wide. Rangers finally break up the momentum and go back on attack. 6:22 to go in period.

4:40 -- Derek Stepan has a goal and two assists in this game. He is flying. His heads-up pass to Grachev alone in the slot was an indication of how well he sees the ice and how he can set up goals with remarkably accurate passing ability.

4:37 -- Nearly halfway through second period. Rangers have just tied it on a beautiful pass by Stepan to Grachev on a 2-on-1. Score is now 4-4.

COLUMBUS GOAL BY TED RUTH FROM KUBALIK AND JOHANSEN AT 8:45.


4:35 -- Columbus has killed the penalty. Stajcer makes a big save on Kubalik, but former Notre Dame defenseman Ted Ruth comes in as the trailers and puts in rebound. Jackets lead 4-3. Goal came afgter a 2-on-1 with Kubalik just out of box.

4:34 -- Building is full now. Roughly 1,000 on hand including all the scouts and executives who are here. Stepan line working the power play.

4:33 -- Rangers on power play for 2:30.

COLUMBUS GOAL BY FRANCIS FROM SAVARD AT 5:32.

4:31 -- Columbus scores on a rebound on the 4-on-4 to tie game at 3-3. Shots are 16-7 for Rangers.

4:29 -- Leading 3-2, the Rangers will be skating 4-on-4 after a Columbus double-minor. Rangers will have power play in 89 seconds. Kubalik double minor for high sticking at 4:23.

4:28 -- Rangers shorthanded. Wilson for hooking at 3:52. Werek, Bast, Klassen and Maggio out to kill penalty. Relieved by Yogan, Shinnimin, Kundratek and Niemi.

4:27  -- Bourque was stationed in front of net. Stepan made very nice pass from behind goal line. Stepan has been a real treat to watch in this game so far. He is quite a player.

4:25 -- Rangers back on power play. Kantor for hooking at 2:11. Bourque scores off behind-the net pass from Stepan. Rangers lead 3-2.

4:24 -- Fight at 2:05 mark. McNaught vs. Delisle. McNaught clear winner. Both get fighting majors

RANGERS GOAL BY CHRISTIAN THOMAS (UNASSISTED) AT 1:03.

4:21 -- Christian Thomas just flew down the right wing and scored a very pretty goal. Game tied 2-2. A very pretty goal that was all Thomas. His dad Steve, a former NHL star who works for Tampa Bay, is here watching him.

4:20 -- Second period under way. Top line is out.

AFTER ONE PERIOD, COLUMBUS LEADING 2-1.

4:03 -- Big stop on Klassen from right point. Period ends. Columbus leads 2-1. Shots are 12-4 for Rangers.

4:01 -- Second power-play unit is out. One minute left in the period. Penalty killed.

3:59 -- Rangers going on power play as McKelvie draws a penalty in offensive zone. Stepan, Grachev and Bourque out with McIlrath and Kundratek at points. Penalty is against Sucharski (holding).

COLUMBUS GOAL BY KUBALIK FROM JOHANSEN AND CALVERT AT 16:31


3:58 -- Columbus has just scored to go up 2-1. Goal came on wrister from left circle. 3:29 left in period.

3:57 -- 4:17 to go in the period. Faceoff in NYR zone.

3:55 -- Some good pressure by Andrew Yogan, who controlled puck in zone. Stepan just had a shot that went just wide. Five munutes to go in the period. Game still tied 1-1.

3:53 -- Shots are 11-2 for the Rangers with 6:30 to go in period.

3:52 -- More Rangers pressue on the power play. Second unit of Horak, Wilson and Thomas with Maggio and McDonagh. Penalty now killed. 7 mins to go.

3:51 -- Rangers on power play. Goloubef off for holding. Good pressure. Goaltender stops Grachev from the slot.

RANGERS GOAL BY DEREK STEPAN FROM BOURQUE AND McDONAGH AT 10:26

3:49 -- Stepan scores after a big stop on Grachev. Heads-up goal by Stepan who took loose puck around netminder with pretty deke. Game is tied at 1-1. Rangers really coming alive at this point

3:47 -- HItting has picked up as has pace. 10:25 to go in first period.

3:46 -- Save on Christian Thomas from right circle at 7:57. Shots are 3-2 for Rangers.

3:44 -- Stepan just had a scoring chance from the slot broken up by a defenseman. That liine remains out. Big stop on McIlrath off a faceoff. Rangers control in the zone. Grachev and Stepan are wearing the "A" for this game with McDonagh as captain.

COLUMBUS GOAL BY KUBALIK FROM MOORE AT 5:12. Puck was jammed home by Kubalik, stationed to Stajcer's right.

3:43 -- Columbus has just scored to make it 1-0 on the power play at the 5:12 mark.

3:41 -- Klassen takes high-sticking call at 4:01. Columbus on power play. Shinnimin, Werek killing with McIlrath and McDonagh, who is wearing the "C" today.

3:41 -- Grachev leads rush and drops pass for Bourque, who comes around the net. Game is back-and-forth. 4:01 gone in first period.

3:40 -- Fourht line out. There are several hundred fans here today. A couple of prominent Rangers jerseys in the front row.

3:38 -- Shinnimin line is out. Shinnimin carries into zone and Columbus goalie Missiaen falls on puck.

3:35 --Rangers ice puck at 1:02 mark. Horak line is out and applying pressure.

3:34 -- Anthems over. Starters are Stepan line with McIlrath and McDonagh. Game under way.

3:30 -- Players on ice. Defense pairings are McDonagh-McIlrath, Niemi-Kundratek, Klassen-Maggio. Goalie is Stajcer.

3:28 -- Here are the lines for the Rangers: Bourque-Stepan-Grachev, Wilson-Horak-Thomas, Werek-Shinnimin-McNaught, Yogan-Bast-McKelvie. Scratched forwards are Tessier and Manning.

3:15  -- Warmups just concluded, and the Zamboni has just come out. Game begins at 3:30 p.m. On the other ice surface, David's Rink, Carolina and Minnesota are playing a game that began at 3 p.m.
