The Rangers and Senators went to a shootout on Thursday night at Scotiabank Place. Unfortunately for the Rangers the winning shot came off the stick of Ottawa's Kaspars Daugavins -- which was fanned on, only to slip between Henrik Lundqvist's pads -- as the Senators handed the visitors a 3-2 defeat.
After Daugavins eat a thoroughly frustrated Lundqvist, Chris Kreider rang his seventh-round shot off the post, securing the victory for Ottawa. Lundqvist made 35 saves through 65 minutes of hockey, and stopped five of seven shots in the shootout. Ryan Callahan scored the Rangers only goal of the shootout.
Trailing 1-0 the Rangers took advantage of their fourth power play of the game at 10:44 of the third period when Callahan chipped a rebound past Ottawa'back-up goaltender Ben Bishop, who had entered the game nine minutes earlier when starter Craig Anderson suffered an injury. Callahan's fourth goal of the season came after Marc Staal had hammered a shot an original shot on goal, and was also assisted by Derek Stepan.
Fifty-one seconds later the Rangers took their first lead of the night when Ryan McDonagh's snap shot from left wing found its way between Bishop's pads at 11:35. However, with Brian Boyle in the box for a holding penalty, Ottawa pulled even at 13:30 when Mika Zibanejad scored.
Anderson suffered an ankle injury during a collision with Kreider. The Blueshirts rookie chased a dump-in to Anderson's left, had contact with Ottawa defenseman Marc Methot, and fell hard to the ice, proceeding to slide into Anderson, who then crumpled to the ice. No penalty was called on the play.
