GAME RECAP

Associated Press

Trevor Daley broke up a scoreless game with 4:59 left, Richard Bachman made 34 saves to win his second straight start, and the Dallas Stars beat the Rangers 1-0 on Tuesday night.

It appeared neither team would be able to break through, as few scoring chances were generated during the slogfest that included multiple whistles for icing and offsides.

But Daley finally found the net, finishing off a give-and-go play with Mike Ribeiro in the closing minutes. That was enough to give Bachman the win in his second career start.

Henrik Lundqvist was the hard-luck loser despite making 27 saves and shaking off a second-period injury. The Rangers lost for only the third time in 10 games (7-2-1). It was a disappointing finish for Brad Richards, who played his first game against the Stars since he signed with the Rangers in July.

Daley's goal was all the offense Dallas needed to win for the fourth time in six games.

An uneventful first period, in which each team recorded eight fruitless shots, was highlighted by a big collision between Rangers forward Carl Hagelin and Bachman.

Hagelin raced into the Dallas end in pursuit of the puck, and Bachman bolted out of his crease into the left circle to try to beat him to it. They both arrived at the same time in a crash that also included Dallas defenseman Alex Goligoski.

Hagelin was given a questionable penalty for charging, that Rangers coach John Tortorella vociferously protested.

THE BIGGER PICTURE
The final score aside, this was a very strong effort from the Rangers against a team tworking very hard to stifle the Blueshirts' trademark style of play. And without a remarkably strong showing from their goaltender, the Stars would likely not have won this game.
